Rain Keeps the Pond in Good Order

Heavy rain brought the pond into lively order, with frog activity up and insects more visible.

Heavy rain settled over the pond on Sunday, leaving the water and its margins notably active. The weather observation recorded heavy rain, with 30.6 mm of precipitation and a current temperature of 24.4 C. The day’s high was 26.7 C, with a low of 22.4 C. Winds were light to moderate, from the south-southeast at 13.7 kph.

The weather appears to have encouraged familiar changes. The wood frog and green frog chorus moved from quiet to active as temperatures shifted, and visible insect activity rose from low to high. Both changes suit the season and the damp air. The trees and shoreline growth remain in full leaf and fully green, while skunk cabbage and mayapple are still not emerged.

Other small matters continued in their proper measure. Gray squirrels were recorded at moderate caching, chipmunks at moderate activity, and red-winged blackbirds arrived within their usual seasonal window. Bullfrogs remained quiet; salamanders stayed hidden or low in activity; deer were low in activity, though browsing pressure remained moderate. Nothing in the day suggested disorder, only a pond-side community responding as expected to warm rain.
